Pacific Ocean
The largest of the three Volcano Islands, Iwo Jima is seen here from the north. The island is about 8 km (5 mi) long and 4 km (2.5 mi) wide, and covers an area of 21 sq km (8 sq mi). Mount Suribachi (167 m; 546 ft high), on the south side of the island, is an extinct volcano. Iwo Jima was the scene of one of the bloodiest battles in the Pacific Theater of World War II.
