Photos of South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands

The Norwegian Anglican Church (the Whalers Church) was built in 1913 in Grytviken on South Georgia Island in the South Atlantic Ocean. One of the world's southernmost churches, the Neo-Gothic wooden structure was originally part of the Church of Norway but was transferred to the Church of England in 2013. Famed Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton’s funeral service was held in the church after he died in South Georgia while on an expedition in 1922, and he is buried in the nearby cemetery. The church, owned by the UK government and managed by the South Georgia Museum, still holds services and weddings
